RABBIT HASH, Ky. —
Rabbit Hash has a new dog mayor.
After eight years of service, Lucy Lou, a border collie, stepped down as mayor, making way for a new four-legged leader of the small Northern Kentucky community.
Brynneth Pawltro, a 3-year-old pit bull, will take over as mayor. She’s known lovingly around Rabbit Hash simply as Brynn.
Brynn won the mayoral election Tuesday night, receiving 3,367 votes.
In an unprecedented move, the Rabbit Hash Historical Society named the two runner-ups, Bourbon and Lady, as Ambassadors of Rabbit Hash. In the case that Brynn is unavailable for an event or obligation, the Ambassadors will fill in.
Brynn ran on a platform of promoting peace and love in her hometown. She’s a rescued pit bull who loves tennis balls and licking people.
On Tuesday, Lucy Lou passed on the torch to her successor, sniffing the butts of the candidates in ceremonial fashion and giving her approval to mayor-elect Brynn.
Every four years in Rabbit Hash, residents can “vote” for their favorite canine candidate by donating to the Rabbit Hash Historic Society. Each vote costs $1.
In mid-February, the Rabbit Hash General Store was destroyed by a large fire. The store has been on the National Register of Historic Places since the early 1980s. Money raised from this year’s election will go toward rebuilding the store to its historical correctness.
